Fed: Bali appeal winding down, says Red Cross
MELBOURNE, April 4 AAP - As the six-month anniversary of the Bali bombings draws near,the Australian Red Cross has begun scaling back its emergency relief grants.
The charity today said the $14.2 million generated by the Bali Appeal would now bedirected to people with long-term needs, such as those with significant injuries and disabilities,and to the dependents of those killed.
"There are many Australians who will experience prolonged hardship as a direct resultof the Bali bombing and it is important that we ensure the majority of remaining appealfunds reach those with long-term needs," Australian Red Cross vice-chairman Brian Wardsaid.
Mr Ward said it did not mean assistance to all other affected Australians would immediatelycease.
He said limited assistance, including counselling, financial advice, emergency financialaid, and referral support would be available for the next three months.
The Extended Assistance Program will be available from now until June 30.
A total of 89 Australians died in the October 12 bombings in Bali's Kuta tourist precinct.
